Hoover City Council votes to end bus service

Effective October  31, 2009, Highway 31 Bus service for Hoover will end.

The City Council for Hoover has elected to end bus service for the Hoover area.

The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority in the spring of 2008 asked The City of Hoover to increase its transit funding from $38,000 in 2008 to $110,235 in 2009. The city, faced with dwindling revenue, allocated $50,000 for transit after passing an $89.5 million general fund budget 10 months into fiscal 2009.

William Copling, the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority's Director of Operations, said in an interview Monday night he was surprised by the vote given the new retail development in Hoover.  He said the decision to end bus service will not only impact MAX riders, but also disabled people who use the Paratransit service for trips to medical appointments.

The  Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority will greatly miss serving the Hoover area.
